Dark templars (DTs) have proven to be one of the most dangerous attackers in all of Starcraft 2. They're permanently cloaked and inflict a huge amount of damage.
In order to perform a dark templar rush, you start out by making a pylon, then a gateway. Whenever the gateway completes, create a cybernetics core. Once the cybernetics core finishes, construct a twilight council. Ultimately, when the twilight council completes, assemble a dark shrine. Immediately after you have a dark shrine available, you are able to produce the dark templars at the gateway.
The sooner you secure access to dark templars, the more overwhelming they should be, although they are a really powerful unit no matter how early they're used.
Your dark templars may be utilized in two very powerful ways. Considering that they kill workers in one attack, you can easily run your dark templars directly into the mineral line and eliminate every worker. This essentially destroys your opponent's economy and should allow you to be able to easily produce an overpowering army well before they recover.
Furthermore, DTs are very efficient at controlling the map. If your opponent possesses detectors, or has walled in, it might be more productive to simply wait until your opponent attempts to establish an expansion and prevent them from attaining that expansion. Or perhaps employ them to control the towers and demolish opposing forces. With the help of cloaked forces roaming the map, you can generally safely expand and outproduce your adversary.
These units need to be an important component of all Starcraft 2 strategy for Protoss gamers. Whenever you throw DTs in play, you acquire a psychological edge. The competition has to either build fixed detectors (cannons, spore crawlers, missile turrets) at every expansion and at great cost, or they have to create mobile detectors (ravens, observers, overseers) to go together with armies.
Do not forget that 2 templars are able to be merged to create an archon, which can attack flying detectors.
